Candidare un immagine

Linee guida per candidare un'immagine

È importante leggere le linee guida prima di candidare un'immagine.

A seguito è riportato un riassunto dei punti essenziali per candidare e valutare le immagini candidate:

Risoluzione - Le fotografie con una risoluzione inferiore a 2 milioni di pixel vengono generalmente rifiutate e rimosse ad eccezione di motivi contrari di particolare importanza. Si noti che le immagini con risoluzione 1600 x 1200 hanno 1.92 Mpx, appena inferiore al limite minimo di 2Mpx.

Ricordiamo che le immagini caricate su Commons vengono visualizzate non solo su schermi tradizionali di PC ma sono utilizzate anche per stampa e visualizzazione su schermi ad alta risoluzione. Non possiamo certo prevedere quali tecnologie verranno utilizzate nel futuro quindi è importante che le immagini scelte per la vetrina abbiano una risoluzione quanto più alta è possibile.

Scansioni - È consigliabile seguire la guida alla scansione, che propone suggerimenti per l'ottenimento di immagini ottimali

Fuoco - ovviamente ogni oggetto significativo dell'immagine deve essere ben definito e a fuoco.

Primo piano e sfondo - Oggetti in primissimo piano o di sfondo possono distrarre dalla vista dal oggetto principale dell'immagine. È il caso di controllare se qualche elemento in primo piano non copra nessun elemento importante e che lo sfondo non distolga l'attenzione e renda confusa l'immagine (per esempio evitare che vi sia una luce forte alle spalle di un viso)

Qualità generale - le immagini candidate devono essere di alta qualità tecnica.

Le manipolazioni digitali non devono essere effettuate per ingannare, ma vanno usate solo limitatamente e con cura per correggere difetti fotografici. Le manipolazioni comunemente accettate sono il ritaglio e la correzione di prospettiva, focale, colore ed esposizione. Manipolazioni più estese, come può essere la rimozione di un elemento di distrazione dello sfondo, vanno chiaramente descritte nel testo di descrizione per mezzo del template {{Retouched picture}}. Manipolazioni non descritte o descritte in modo insufficiente non permettono la candidatura alla vetrina.

Valore - il nostro principale obiettivo è eleggere le immagini con il maggior valore rispetto a tutte le loro simili. Le immagini devono essere in qualche modo speciali, perciò fai attenzione:
- quasi tutti i tramonti sono esteticamente piacevoli, infatti molte immagini sono simili alle altre,
- gli scatti notturni sono gradevoli ma generalmente le foto scattate di giorno mostrano molti più dettagli,
- non tutte le belle foto hanno in realtà un valore che non sia esclusivamente personale.

Per quanto riguarda l'aspetto tecnico abbiamo come parametri l'esposizione, la composizione, il controllo del movimento e la profondità di campo.

L'esposizione si riferisce alla combinazione tra tempo di esposizione e diaframma. Questa combinazione permette generalmente di avere una curva di tono che è in grado di rappresentare ombre e luci con un dettaglio accettabile. Questa curva viene detta latitudine di posa. Un'immagine può essere nella banda bassa, media o alta. Le fotocamere digitali (e le loro foto) hanno una latitudine di posa più stretta delle macchine a pellicola. La mancanza di dettagli nelle zone d'ombra non è necessariamente una caratteristica negativa. Infatti questa può essere parte dell'effetto desiderato, mentre ampie zone eccessivamente sovraesposte possono distrarre la vista.

La composizione si riferisce alla distribuzione degli elementi nell'immagine. La “Regola dei Terzi” è una buona linea guida per la composizione e eredita molto dagli studi di disegno. Il concetto principale considera l'immagine divisa con due linee orizzontali e due verticali, che dividono l'immagine in tre parti. Generalmente se l'oggetto viene centrato si ha un effetto poco interessante, mentre se l'oggetto viene posizionato in uno dei punti di interesse, ovvero l'intersezione delle quattro linee, si ottiene un effetto decisamente migliore. Le linee dell'orizzonte infatti non dovrebbero essere posizionate nel centro, perché taglierebbero la foto a metà; è invece preferibile scegliere una delle linee orizzontali. Complessivamente bisogna tendere a creare un'immagine dinamica.

Il controllo del movimento si riferisce al modo viene rappresentato il movimento nell'immagine. Il movimento può essere bloccato (seguito dalla fotocamera) oppure può essere lasciato scorrere, tuttavia l'oggetto principale dell'immagine deve essere visibile. Nessuna delle due tecniche è migliore dell'altra, la buona riuscita dipende esclusivamente dal tipo di effetto ricercato. Per esempio, fotografando una vettura da corsa che appare statica in relazione allo sfondo, che invece scorre sul retro, si ottiene l'oggetto principale in una condizione statica mentre lo sfondo crea il senso di movimento. (questa tecnica è chiamata "panning"). D'altra parte, fotografando un giocatore di basket in salto, bloccato in relazione a tutto il resto dello sfondo, si otterrebbe un buono scatto proprio per la posa innaturale.

La profondità di campo (PdC o DOF dall'inglese depth of field) è la distanza davanti e dietro il soggetto principale che appare nitida (a fuoco). Questo parametro viene scelto a seconda delle necessità di ogni immagine e può parimenti migliorare o peggiorare la qualità di una fotografia. Generalmente viene utilizzata una PdC ridotta per mettere al centro dell'attenzione il soggetto principale, separandolo da tutto il resto dello sfondo. Invece viene utilizzata una grande PdC per enfatizzare la profondità di un immagine. Gli obiettivi grandangolari in genere una grande PdC mentre i teleobiettivi ne hanno una decisamente ridotta. In gran parte la PdC dipende dall'apertura del diaframma: aumenta con il diminuire dell'apertura e viceversa.

Per quanto riguarda l'aspetto grafico prendiamo invece in considerazione nitidezza, profondità, colore, superficie, prospettiva, bilanciamento, proporzione, ecc.

La nitidezza si riferisce alle linee di contorno del soggetto principale.

La profondità si riferisce alla qualità dell'aspetto tridimensionale del soggetto. Ciò si ottiene soprattutto tramite un'adeguata illuminazione laterale (come quella della prima mattinata o del tardo pomeriggio) e non esclusivamente frontale, al fine di evitare l'appiattimento del soggetto.

Il colore è un elemento molto importante e non deve essere né troppo né poco saturo.

La superficie si riferisce alla qualità della superficie degli oggetti fotografati.

La prospettiva si riferisce all'angolazione dalla quale è stata scattata la fotografia. Essa crea una serie di rette immaginarie che seguono gli spigoli paralleli degli oggetti e si incontrano in un punto che può essere dentro o fuori l'immagine.

Il bilanciamento si riferisce alla disposizione degli oggetti nell'immagine e può essere equilibrato o porre maggior peso verso una direzione.

La proporzione si riferisce alla relazione tra le dimensioni degli oggetti all'interno dell'immagine. Generalmente si tende a rappresentare oggetti con ridotta relazione, ma una buona tecnica è quella di rappresentare gli oggetti di dimensioni minori in modo più esteso, contrariamente a quanto è in realtà. Per esempio, un piccolo fiore che viene rappresentato con le stesse dimensioni di una grande montagna: questa tecnica viene chiamata inversione di scala.

Ovviamente, non tutte le caratteristiche devono essere necessariamente presenti. Le immagini possono essere giudicate sia per una sola caratteristica che per diverse caratteristiche, anche contemporaneamente.

Significato simbolico o rilevanza particolare …Le guerre d'opinione possono iniziare!…. Va ricordato che una pessima fotografia di un soggetto difficilissimo da fotografare è sicuramente migliore di un'immagine ordinaria e tradizionale (come un comune tramonto).

Le immagini possono essere scelte da un fotografo o da un osservatore anche per motivi culturali, tenendo però sempre conto del contesto dello scatto e non di quello dell'osservatore. Un'immagine inoltre può "parlare" alle persone e avere la capacità di evocare emozioni, che tuttavia non devono essere necessariamente piacevoli.

Per ottimizzare le possibilità di successo delle candidature delle tue immagini è consigliabile leggere le linee guida complete.

Come candidare un'immagine

Se credi di aver trovato o creato un immagine che può essere presa in considerazione per la vetrina, che abbia una appropriata descrizione e una licenza adeguata, allora segui queste indicazioni.

Punto 1: copia il nome dell'immagine dentro la casella di testo (includendo anche il prefisso Image: ) a seguito del testo già presente nella casella (per esempio Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:IL-NOME-DELLA-TUA-IMMAGINE.JPG.) ed infine clicca il pulsante candida una nuova immagine.

Punto 2: segui le istruzioni della pagina alla quale vieni collegato e salva le modifiche apportate.

Punto 3: inserisci manualmente un collegamento alla pagina creata in cima alla lista candidati: Clicca qui e aggiungi il testo che segue all'inizio della lista di candidature:

Per votare puoi usare i seguenti templates:

{{A favore}} ( Support) per supportare la candidatura,
{{Contrario}} ( Oppose) per opporsi alla candidatura,
{{Neutrale}} ( Neutral) per esprimere un parere neutrale,
{{Commento}} ( Comment) per esprimere solo un commento,
{{Info}} ( Info) per aggiungere delle informazioni riguardanti l'immagine,
{{Domanda}} ( Question) per chiedere informazioni.

Puoi inoltre evidenziare che l'immagine non ha possibilità di essere eletta con il template {{FPX|motivo}}, inserendo al posto di motivo le ragioni per cui è chiaramente inaccettabile per la vetrina.

Ogni votante è pregato di motivare il proprio voto con qualche parola, in particolar modo se si vota contro. Ricorda inoltre di aggiungere la tua firma (~~~~). I voti anonimi non sono accettati.

Candidare un'immagine alla rimozione dalla vetrina

Gli standard della vetrina cambiano col tempo. Può succedere che un'immagine che era stata eletta per la vetrina non sia più adatta agli standard attuali.

Questa lista è perciò composta dalle immagini considerate non più adatte a rimanere nella vetrina. Vota:

{{Mantenere}} Keep per far sì che l'immagine rimanga nella vetrina.
{{Rimuovere}} Oppose per far sì che l'immagine venga rimossa dalla vetrina.

Se consideri che un'immagine non rispetti più i criteri delle immagini in vetrina, candidala per la rimozione copiando il nome dell'immagine dentro questa casella di testo (includendo il prefisso dell' Image:) a seguito del testo già presente in essa:

Nella pagina appena creata includi:

Le informazioni sull'origine dell'immagine (autore dell'immagine, autore della candidatura);
Un collegamento all'iniziale candidatura per l'inserimento nella vetrina (che va inserito sotto ==Collegamenti== nella descrizione dell'immagine);
Il motivo per cui l'hai candidata per la rimozione dalla vetrina e il tuo Nome utente.

Dopo aver fatto ciò devi inserire manualmente un collegamento alla pagina creata all'inizio della lista di rimozione dalla vetrina.

Politica di elezione per la vetrina

Regole generali

Il periodo di votazione è di 9 giorni completi, a partire dalla candidatura. I risultato verrà determinato alla fine di questo periodo. I voti aggiunti il decimo giorno o a seguito non verranno considerati.
Sono benvenuti i contributori anonimi.
I contributi di anonimi alle discussioni sono benvenuti.
I voti di contributori anonimi non saranno accettati.
La candidatura non conta come voto. Il voto di supporto va esplicitato.
Gli autori delle candidature possono ritirare le loro immagini candidate in ogni momento. Questo si ottiene scrivendo semplicemente "I withdraw my nomination" (in inglese: ritiro la mia candidatura)
o aggiungendo il testo {{withdraw|~~~~}}.
Ricorda che l'obiettivo del progetto Wikimedia Commons è di costruire una raccolta di immagini utilizzabili da tutti i progetti Wikimedia, inclusi possibili progetti futuri. Perciò non bisogna pensare che questo sia una raccolta dedicata esclusivamente al progetto Wikipedia e per tanto le immagini non vanno valutate in funzione di ciò.
Le immagini vengono rimosse dalla lista di candidature se non hanno voti a supporto (escluso quello dell'autore della candidatura) entro il quinto giorno dalla candidatura (La regola del quinto giorno)
Le immagini dotate del template {{FPX}} non devono essere rimosse dalla lista entro le 48 ore successive al momento in cui è stato applicato il template, purchè non vi sia nessun voto a supporto oltre quello dell'autore della candidatura.

Regole di ammissione e rimozione dalla vetrina

Un'immagine candidata viene ammessa alla vetrina se si verificano le seguenti condizioni:

La licenza è adeguata (ovviamente).
Se ha almeno 5 voti a supporto.
Se il rapporto tra voti pro/contro è almeno 2/1 (se ha due terzi di maggioranza).
Non possono essere ammessi alla vetrina diverse versioni della stessa immagine, ne deve essere scelta una sola versione.

I criteri per la rimozione dalla vetrina sono gli stessi per l'ammissione ad essa, compreso il periodo di voto e la regola del quinto giorno (vedi nelle Regole generali).

Ogni utente esperto può portare a termine una votazione: per istruzioni su come compiere questa operazione vedi la guida per portare a termina la votazione.

Infine, sii cortese

Per piacere non dimenticare che l'immagine che stai giudicando è frutto del lavoro di qualcuno. Evita di usare frasi come è orribile: se devi opporti non fare spiacevoli considerazioni. Inoltre ricorda che è necessario scrivere in inglese se vuoi essere compreso dagli altri utenti e che il tuo utilizzo di questa lingua e quello degli altri utenti può comunque generare incomprensioni se non si ha un'ottima conoscenza, perciò scegli le parole con cura.

Buon voto… e ricorda che.... tutte le regole possono avere qualche eccezione.

Info Shrimp and crayfish boat LL-25 MiTina turning into her home harbor in Norra Grundsund, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.

Standing on the jetty taking photos, I noticed the boat was approaching the harbor a bit faster than I thought it might, also taking the turn into the harbor a bit sharper than it should throwing up a good bow wave and backwash. After it had moored I jokingly commented on this to the captain. He said that he saw me on the jetty with my camera and was showing off to give me a good photo. :) After editing the photo, I sent a copy of it to the boat's internet page and gave them the rights to use it as they pleased. Comment Fixed gallery link. You must use the wiki code since the FPCBot can't read it otherwise. You are probably more used to en-wiki's FP system where everything is done manually, but here with the large amount of FPs we have, it's all handled by bots so the code has to be precise. Neutral Nice light texture. The in-camera focus stack must be very comfortable compared to the tedious normal stacking. Unfortunately it has provided the image with a lot of stacking errors. According to this [1] the sculptures at the doorway are just idealized figures - the one on the other side is a Viking (!). Other terra cotta sculptures on the building were of historical figures. Info Large-banded blenny (Ophioblennius steindachneri), Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico. It's found in coral reefs in the eastern Pacific ocean. This species reaches a length of 18 centimetres (7.1 in). They are territorial and feed during the day when they graze on algae and prey on sessile invertebrates by using the incisor teeth, which are similar in shape to combs, to scrape food off the rock. Comment I think these are very interesting, but having opened the first two and looked at them in full size, there are quite a lot of JPEG artefacts, particularly in the darker areas of the picture Cmao20 (talk) 20:05, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose I don't believe that this is a valid set either, there are a bunch of these relics but here we see "only" 14. Apart from the quality I see very similar items without any explanation what do they have in common. Oppose I agree with Poco here. The information on each file is the bare minimum, even after I added the basics to each file. If there is an article about the items, it's best to link to it in the file description on each page, posting it here serves no purpose since this page will be archived in a week and in effect hidden from public view. @JayCubby - I did remove my vote as I ponder this a bit more. I experimented with cropping the photo and found it to be much more evocative, though found it difficult to get it "just right". I tried the crop on the left to just enough to remove nearest gentleman's face, leaving the full expression of the other man; and, a crop from the right to remove the sliver of the person next to the woman with her arm raised. Support Been thinking about this for a long time now, and it is a very moving photo of very good quality taken at what must have been a rather chaotic event. It's a document of an historic event that I think should be preserved and featured in its entirety, after that people can use it as a base for other crops. Sure, we featured Heroico instead of the original, but that was mostly because the cropped version is the best one known and mostly used. Comment - The above version is itself cropped. On EmmettTillExhibit.org, which was created in partnership with the Till family, The Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, and The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, see Image 16. In that "original" photo, Till's grandfather is also in the photo. As such, if one accepts a crop from the right, accepting a crop from the left (which is actually not taking out key people), would seem acceptable. - ERcheck (talk) 15:30, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now the problem with that is that the full photo, probably from the original negative, is apparently owned some foundation or museum, so we are not sure that one is free to use and can probably not get our hands on it. The cropped photo above on the other hand, is from a paper copy owned by the Smithsonian and we know it is free. This is why so few old iconic photos get promoted. There are often many versions of them floating around and people here are forever quarrelling about which version to promote. (I can't remember how many attempts were made for different versions of Heroico for years.) Animals in zoos or farms are usually animals brought there and held in captivity. There are exceptions, such as wild birds, squirrels, rats, etc. that are drawn to that park/zoo/farms and frequent it. Species + specific location is generally used for wild animals. Here too there are exceptions, like someone taking their domesticated dog into a forest for a walk. Species + location is not primarily so that other photographers can go there and take photos of the same animals; the combo plus often a time stamp, is mostly used for people studying for example migration patterns, decline or rise in populations, local deviations and invasive species. In short, how wild species behave. On sites like iNaturalist, an observation of a species is almost useless without the specifics. Well, when A.Savin made his comment, the file only had "Sciurus vulgaris in Austria" which is really a too wide category as far as locations are concerned. The country isn't enough, you need to be more specific than that. If possible, some category about what the squirrel is doing is also welcome. "Melanism in Sciurus vulgaris" should also be used since this is something that makes this squirrel different from other Sciurus vulgaris. Charlesjsharp, just a general point, because I don't think the official rules on categories are all that clear and I have struggled with them in the past too - Cart and Aristeas did a great explanation of categories here. In short, ask yourself questions based on Kipling's honest serving men. In the example of this nomination, I see that you had the 'what' and 'where' covered, though you could have been more specific with the 'where', but you missed the 'when' (Cart has now covered that with adding 'Nature of Vienna in August') and you also had an opportunity to categorise based on the animal's specific behaviour (eating hazelnuts), i.e. not just 'what is it' but 'what is it doing'. A.Savin, while I understand your frustration, keeping an 'oppose' on such grounds is just petty and it won't change Charles' behavior one bit. Let me offer an alternative solution. If Charles, despite being a veteran nominator here and being told and corrected over and over again, still doesn't fulfill the basics of presenting a complete file in the noms, that can be seen as negligence, disrupting the workflow here and causing undue friction on the site. Constantly relying on others to do the work for you and pointing fingers instead, could be grounds for a block. As we know, blocks aren't punitive, but if we are looking at a future where FPC voters repeatedly have to save Charles from himself, that is bleak indeed. Info Tide ice formations in Brofjorden at Sandvik, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. These "ice flowers" are created around rocks near the shoreline as the water level in the fjord changes with the tide's rise and fall at the same time as the fjord freezes over. Sometimes the broken ice "petals" get covered in hoar frost, making them look woolly. The moving tide also creates the large visible ice crystals along the shore. No magic about it, just physics. You have an ice sheet that breaks up around stones when the water level sinks. Rinse and repeat, and hey presto: ice flowers. Makes a lot of noise too. If you read today’s camera/lens reviews and discussions, you would think it’s impossible to take photos of moving people and to capture the right moment without super high-speed AI tracking eye AF, 30 frames per second (including refocussing for each frame!), etc. But Slava Veder captured Lorrie Stirm’s leap of joy perfectly – the right moment with exact focus on Lorrie. Weak oppose Sadly, I have to agree with Julesvernex2. It's unfortunate that excessive sharpening and denoising have resulted in a washed-out and overly uniform look – many details appear lost. With more careful post-processing, especially when using AI-based tools, significantly better results are possible. Weak oppose per Jules and Radomianin, so sorry. It always makes me sad when I see that people have great skills and make every effort to achieve wonderful photos, but then damage these images by rash post-processing so that they look like smartphone shots. This is such a stunning photo, it has deserved much better post-processing. Nerd hint: the pattern in some of the OOF drops of water at the top may be caused by the Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element; this is an additional reason why this photo needs careful editing – one should not emphasize that pattern by sharpening.– Aristeas (talk) 16:26, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For those who have not read Kafka, this transforming work is a nod to his most famous book, The Metamorphosis, where one morning, ordinary salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant cockroach. The writing on the two cars, the stone ballast in front of the train are not clear. The trees appear as smudges. Given the 23 MP res and 1/1600 shutter, I expect better better detail. Perhaps the camera was set to medium or low jpg quality? Or while saving in post-processing? I strongly disagree with the idea that an FP should be printable at the highest res without need for downsampling. Ultimately this is just punishing creators for uploading high resolution files. A 23 megapixel image that is slightly blurry at full size but sharp when downsampled to 10 megapixels is superior to a completely sharp 10 megapixel image in every way. If you like, but I think this is a very unfair standard of judgment. Judging a 23 megapixel image at pixel-level is like looking at it through a magnifying glass. It's a remnant from my professional life when I worked with large prints (like pasting a 1x2 meter print of this on a wall) or needing to extract tiny details from studio shots of jewelry. Actually the same reasons why large files and good sharpness are expected of FPs, they should be up for similar tasks if needed. JayCubby, whatever the light there is, was there in the original I had to work with (check upload history). I only made some very minor purple correction on the man below the helmet and his gloves. The rest of the image was masked out and untouched since I couldn't tell if the strong purple on the clamp is from the arc light or just CA. For the record, support. The pinkish light on the clamp might just be a consequence of the camera picking up infrared or near-IR light that the human eye can't see. Neat composition. Neutral Nothing wrong with the quality (with odd light comes odd colors), but the close crop is what photo journalists go for, and for an FP I would have liked the whole helmet and gloves in the photo. Comment My immediate instinct is that it isn't the best angle from which to depict this sculpture. Few sculptures of people look their best when the camera is below their eye-level. Support Agree with Cmao20 that sculptures normally look best when photographed (or painted, etc.) at eye level, just like real people. However I have learned apropos of this FP nomination (which was taken with a Rolleiflex, a camera you normally hold at waist level) that photographing people from a lower angle can yield interesting results, and the same will apply to sculptures. Of course in this case the effect is different because the photo has been taken from a very short distance, hence the angle to the face is much steeper than in the Rolleiflex example; and indeed there is a little distortion of the proportions. So the problem is rather the short distance. But I assume this is unavoidable due to the glass display case (to minimize the effect of a glass surface one must hold the lens directly at the glass), and considering these difficult circumstances I regard the result as decent and impressive. – Aristeas (talk) 08:36, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The best way to get acquainted with what quality is good enough is to first nominate your photos at COM:QIC. I think that you might have gotten this idea from your personal opinion of photography with phones? All images are evaluated at 100% magnification. The standards for quality for FPs is very high, it's only lately that some phones aided by good editing programs have been able to compete here. Take a look at some of the other nominations here with a lot of support. Open them up full and you'll see the difference. Also see my comment below about images from phones. It's usually something of a shock for people who are used to phone photos, how much more image quality is required here. This is because FPs are expected to hold quality enough to have partial images extracted from it if necessary, or to be printed in large format. Also none of us here go by just our own experiences with phone photos. Many of us have been reviewing photos here for years, thousands of photos each year, so we have seen all sorts of photos from all sorts of cameras. Sometimes a photo from a cheap compact camera can outshine a photo taken by an insanely expensive Hasselblad or a shot that NASA spent millions to get. Oppose Sadly I would not say the quality is 'very good'. It is good for a phone camera but I fear this will not cut it at FPC. The detail at full size is not really there - zoom in to pixel level size and look how little sharpness and definition there is on anything - compare to the nominations on this page right now that have a lot of support and the difference is clear. Comment Osmo dont let to kill mans ambition for photo. I think smartphones are good enough today to made more than good shot. We already have many FP, even from cheaper phones. Yes I know that it has happened in some cases (like this or this where not much detail is needed, both made in good light, while this nom is trying a very-hard-to-do light situation), but it's still much harder to get the detail and sharpness needed for FPs with a phone, and like you say some editing is usually needed. We don't rank FPs by the camera they were made with, that is beside the point, only the end-result matters. Some motifs are easier to capture well with a phone, and panoramas are among the hardest. I don't dismiss phone photos in general, I always examine them carefully and sometimes I'm surprised by how good they are, but this one is too blotchy for me. It looks like there is a strong wind, and all that motion makes it even harder for the phone to perform well. Take a look at these two images, both taken by me with the same phone, both edited as well as I could with the same Photoshop version, and notice the difference between the windy one and the one taken on a calm day. I could almost be thinking about nominating the "calm" photo, but people here would think I was nuts if I tried the "windy" one. --Cart (talk) 20:57, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment It absolutely is possible to get FPs from smartphones, (this picture I took, for example), but this image really lacks the required sharpness. Also, my picture was taken on the iPhone's RawMAX settings, which produces large raw images with more detail captured than with usual that can be edited in post-proccessing. They were only meant to illustrate how wind can affect a phone photos quality, not something I would consider nominate here. After the brightening the background, esp. the sky, looked pale and yellowish, so I have added some more contrast and blue saturation to restore it. Info Shrimp and crayfish boat LL-25 MiTina turning into her home harbor in Norra Grundsund, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.

Standing on the jetty taking photos, I noticed the boat was approaching the harbor a bit faster than I thought it might, also taking the turn into the harbor a bit sharper than it should throwing up a good bow wave and backwash. After it had moored I jokingly commented on this to the captain. He said that he saw me on the jetty with my camera and was showing off to give me a good photo. :) After editing the photo, I sent a copy of it to the boat's internet page and gave them the rights to use it as they pleased. Neutral Nice light texture. The in-camera focus stack must be very comfortable compared to the tedious normal stacking. Unfortunately it has provided the image with a lot of stacking errors. According to this [3] the sculptures at the doorway are just idealized figures - the one on the other side is a Viking (!). Other terra cotta sculptures on the building were of historical figures. Oppose I agree with Poco here. The information on each file is the bare minimum, even after I added the basics to each file. If there is an article about the items, it's best to link to it in the file description on each page, posting it here serves no purpose since this page will be archived in a week and in effect hidden from public view. The images are not so different from each other or eye-catching that a set is needed, complete or incomplete. @JayCubby - I did remove my vote as I ponder this a bit more. I experimented with cropping the photo and found it to be much more evocative, though found it difficult to get it "just right". I tried the crop on the left to just enough to remove nearest gentleman's face, leaving the full expression of the other man; and, a crop from the right to remove the sliver of the person next to the woman with her arm raised. Support Been thinking about this for a long time now, and it is a very moving photo of very good quality taken at what must have been a rather chaotic event. It's a document of an historic event that I think should be preserved and featured in its entirety, after that people can use it as a base for other crops. Sure, we featured Heroico instead of the original, but that was mostly because the cropped version is the best one known and mostly used. Comment - The above version is itself cropped. On EmmettTillExhibit.org, which was created in partnership with the Till family, The Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, and The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, see Image 16. In that "original" photo, Till's grandfather is also in the photo. As such, if one accepts a crop from the right, accepting a crop from the left (which is actually not taking out key people), would seem acceptable. - ERcheck (talk) 15:30, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now the problem with that is that the full photo, probably from the original negative, is apparently owned some foundation or museum, so we are not sure that one is free to use and can probably not get our hands on it. The cropped photo above on the other hand, is from a paper copy owned by the Smithsonian and we know it is free. This is why so few old iconic photos get promoted. There are often many versions of them floating around and people here are forever quarrelling about which version to promote. (I can't remember how many attempts were made for different versions of Heroico for years.) But for me the resulting feeling was different - I felt reassured that the choice of B&W for this one was right. Animals in zoos or farms are usually animals brought there and held in captivity. There are exceptions, such as wild birds, squirrels, rats, etc. that are drawn to that park/zoo/farms and frequent it. Species + specific location is generally used for wild animals. Here too there are exceptions, like someone taking their domesticated dog into a forest for a walk. Species + location is not primarily so that other photographers can go there and take photos of the same animals; the combo plus often a time stamp, is mostly used for people studying for example migration patterns, decline or rise in populations, local deviations and invasive species. In short, how wild species behave. On sites like iNaturalist, an observation of a species is almost useless without the specifics. Well, when A.Savin made his comment, the file only had "Sciurus vulgaris in Austria" which is really a too wide category as far as locations are concerned. The country isn't enough, you need to be more specific than that. If possible, some category about what the squirrel is doing is also welcome. "Melanism in Sciurus vulgaris" should also be used since this is something that makes this squirrel different from other Sciurus vulgaris. Charlesjsharp, just a general point, because I don't think the official rules on categories are all that clear and I have struggled with them in the past too - Cart and Aristeas did a great explanation of categories here. In short, ask yourself questions based on Kipling's honest serving men. In the example of this nomination, I see that you had the 'what' and 'where' covered, though you could have been more specific with the 'where', but you missed the 'when' (Cart has now covered that with adding 'Nature of Vienna in August') and you also had an opportunity to categorise based on the animal's specific behaviour (eating hazelnuts), i.e. not just 'what is it' but 'what is it doing'. A.Savin, while I understand your frustration, keeping an 'oppose' on such grounds is just petty and it won't change Charles' behavior one bit. Let me offer an alternative solution. If Charles, despite being a veteran nominator here and being told and corrected over and over again, still doesn't fulfill the basics of presenting a complete file in the noms, that can be seen as negligence, disrupting the workflow here and causing undue friction on the site. Constantly relying on others to do the work for you and pointing fingers instead, could be grounds for a block. As we know, blocks aren't punitive, but if we are looking at a future where FPC voters repeatedly have to save Charles from himself, that is bleak indeed. Info Tide ice formations in Brofjorden at Sandvik, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. These "ice flowers" are created around rocks near the shoreline as the water level in the fjord changes with the tide's rise and fall at the same time as the fjord freezes over. Sometimes the broken ice "petals" get covered in hoar frost, making them look woolly. The moving tide also creates the large visible ice crystals along the shore. No magic about it, just physics. You have an ice sheet that breaks up around stones when the water level sinks. Rinse and repeat, and hey presto: ice flowers. Makes a lot of noise too. With more careful post-processing, especially when using AI-based tools, significantly better results are possible. It always makes me sad when I see that people have great skills and make every effort to achieve wonderful photos, but then damage these images by rash post-processing so that they look like smartphone shots. This is such a stunning photo, it has deserved much better post-processing. For those who have not read Kafka, this transforming work is a nod to his most famous book, The Metamorphosis, where one morning, ordinary salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant cockroach. The writing on the two cars, the stone ballast in front of the train are not clear. The trees appear as smudges. Given the 23 MP res and 1/1600 shutter, I expect better better detail. Perhaps the camera was set to medium or low jpg quality? Or while saving in post-processing? I strongly disagree with the idea that an FP should be printable at the highest res without need for downsampling. Ultimately this is just punishing creators for uploading high resolution files. A 23 megapixel image that is slightly blurry at full size but sharp when downsampled to 10 megapixels is superior to a completely sharp 10 megapixel image in every way. If you like, but I think this is a very unfair standard of judgment. Judging a 23 megapixel image at pixel-level is like looking at it through a magnifying glass. Support Love the light. Certified pixel peeper here. It's a remnant from my professional life when I worked with large prints (like pasting a 1x2 meter print of this on a wall) or needing to extract tiny details from studio shots of jewelry. Actually the same reasons why large files and good sharpness are expected of FPs, they should be up for similar tasks if needed. JayCubby, whatever the light there is, was there in the original I had to work with (check upload history). I only made some very minor purple correction on the man below the helmet and his gloves. The rest of the image was masked out and untouched since I couldn't tell if the strong purple on the clamp is from the arc light or just CA. For the record, support. The pinkish light on the clamp might just be a consequence of the camera picking up infrared or near-IR light that the human eye can't see. Neat composition. Neutral Nothing wrong with the quality (with odd light comes odd colors), but the close crop is what photo journalists go for, and for an FP I would have liked the whole helmet and gloves in the photo. Comment My immediate instinct is that it isn't the best angle from which to depict this sculpture. Few sculptures of people look their best when the camera is below their eye-level. Support Agree with Cmao20 that sculptures normally look best when photographed (or painted, etc.) at eye level, just like real people. However I have learned apropos of this FP nomination (which was taken with a Rolleiflex, a camera you normally hold at waist level) that photographing people from a lower angle can yield interesting results, and the same will apply to sculptures. Of course in this case the effect is different because the photo has been taken from a very short distance, hence the angle to the face is much steeper than in the Rolleiflex example; and indeed there is a little distortion of the proportions. So the problem is rather the short distance. But I assume this is unavoidable due to the glass display case (to minimize the effect of a glass surface one must hold the lens directly at the glass), and considering these difficult circumstances I regard the result as decent and impressive. – Aristeas (talk) 08:36, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thank you for your kind response. Is the quality an actual issue here? The quality is very good and in the same level as any other photos of panoramic views (in my opinion of course). I think that you might have gotten this idea from your personal opinion of photography with phones? Or is it general consensus-driven "rule of thumb" that pictures can't be featured if they have been taken with a phone? All images are evaluated at 100% magnification. The standards for quality for FPs is very high, it's only lately that some phones aided by good editing programs have been able to compete here. Take a look at some of the other nominations here with a lot of support. Open them up full and you'll see the difference. Also see my comment below about images from phones. It's usually something of a shock for people who are used to phone photos, how much more image quality is required here. This is because FPs are expected to hold quality enough to have partial images extracted from it if necessary, or to be printed in large format. Also none of us here go by just our own experiences with phone photos. Many of us have been reviewing photos here for years, thousands of photos each year, so we have seen all sorts of photos from all sorts of cameras. Sometimes a photo from a cheap compact camera can outshine a photo taken by an insanely expensive Hasselblad or a shot that NASA spent millions to get. Oppose Sadly I would not say the quality is 'very good'. It is good for a phone camera but I fear this will not cut it at FPC. The detail at full size is not really there - zoom in to pixel level size and look how little sharpness and definition there is on anything - compare to the nominations on this page right now that have a lot of support and the difference is clear. Comment Osmo dont let to kill mans ambition for photo. I think smartphones are good enough today to made more than good shot. We already have many FP, even from cheaper phones. Yes I know that it has happened in some cases (like this or this where not much detail is needed, both made in good light, while this nom is trying a very-hard-to-do light situation), but it's still much harder to get the detail and sharpness needed for FPs with a phone, and like you say some editing is usually needed. We don't rank FPs by the camera they were made with, that is beside the point, only the end-result matters. Some motifs are easier to capture well with a phone, and panoramas are among the hardest. I don't dismiss phone photos in general, I always examine them carefully and sometimes I'm surprised by how good they are, but this one is too blotchy for me. It looks like there is a strong wind, and all that motion makes it even harder for the phone to perform well. Take a look at these two images, both taken by me with the same phone, both edited as well as I could with the same Photoshop version, and notice the difference between the windy one and the one taken on a calm day. I could almost be thinking about nominating the "calm" photo, but people here would think I was nuts if I tried the "windy" one. --Cart (talk) 20:57, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment It absolutely is possible to get FPs from smartphones, (this picture I took, for example), but this image really lacks the required sharpness. Also, my picture was taken on the iPhone's RawMAX settings, which produces large raw images with more detail captured than with usual that can be edited in post-proccessing. No one is saying it isn't possible to get FPs from phones, we have several examples of that (about 0.08% of all FPs are) , just that it's much harder than with larger sensor cameras. --Cart (talk) 14:57, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, Cart, of course. I was responding to Osmo Lundell and others who may be under the impression that the oppose votes are due to it being a phone picture. Hey, I also think it’s not the sharpest out there definetly, but the quality smd sharpness of the individual birch leaves is not the point of the image, and the quality/sharpness is in align with other panoramif photos, for example the ones Cart gave as an example above. Additionally I responded directly to Carts comment, because indeed it was his opinion which I mistook for a general guideline. But the consensus seems clear already and I respect the community and this conversation as always. The photos I linked to was not examples of what quality we expect from FPs, far from it! They were only meant to illustrate how wind can affect a phone photos quality, not something I would consider nominate here. Also we all express our individual view on photos, unless a guideline is explicitly quoted.

Support Impressive high-resolution panorama of the picturesque old town of Sion with its two castle hills. Alternative version

Support @W.carter, Cmao20, Famberhorst, and Poco a poco: Cart and Famberhorst are right that the original is a little too dark and could use a bit more contrast. This is an attempt to improve it. After the brightening the background, esp. the sky, looked pale and yellowish, so I have added some more contrast and blue saturation to restore it.
