Increasing ISO/shutter speed on plane photos

Hello!

I've been looking through your aviation pictures and they are nice! I would recommend increasing your ISO to 400 (the dual gain point on the R5 you shoot with), which would help push your shutter speed past 1/1000 and help a lot with low-level blur on a lot of your shots. The noise and dynamic range penalty are minimal on the R5 (at ISO 400 it's about 1 stop worse dynamic range), but the reduction in motion blur would likely be more noticeable.

On my Nikon Z8 I've found going to ISO 500 (my camera's dual gain point) even during broad daylight has pretty good benefits on sharpness, as it lets me go from say, 1/400 to 1/2000, and I'm getting much more low-level detail in my plane photos now.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I'm still working out the transition from a DSLR (5DS/7DII) to mirrorless, the viewfinder and focus settings have taken some getting used to. I agree, any ISO under 1600 on the R5 works out fine. The 5DS started getting noisier above 400. Acroterion (talk) 00:32, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
